Upcoming City of Northampton Meetings


Please come to support improving traffic safety and movement, creating a place where ALL modes of transportation are embraced.

The City is designing, and we expect the Commonwealth to build, a roundabout (small traffic circle) at the intersection of North King Street and Hatfield, just south of the River Valley Market.  The roundabout is similar to the one at Pleasant/Conz and Main/Bridge Road/Look Park.  Roundabouts create extremely efficient and safe vehicle and pedestrian movements, making it friendlier for all modes of transportation and reducing crashes.

The project will also extend the North King Street sidewalks from Big Y to River Valley Food Coop the Hatfield Road sidewalks from Cooke Avenue to North King Street.

PURPOSE:      A Design Public Hearing will be held by MassDOT to discuss and provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Route 5/10 (North King Street) and Hatfield Street intersection roundabout project in the City of Northampton, MA.  All views and comments made at the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.


PROPOSAL:     The project involves the construction of a roundabout, roadway realignment,  sidewalk, crosswalk, drainage, sewer and water systems improvements at the intersection of Routes 5/10 (North King Street) and Hatfield Street in the City of Northampton.  The project is being designed by the City.  The project area extends approximately 600 feet along North King Street at Hatfield Street and 500 feet along Hatfield Street.  The project goals are that construction of a roundabout and related improvements will improve overall traffic flow and safety as well as provide safe accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.   Sidewalks will be provided on the west side of Hatfield Street and Route 5/10.  A section of sidewalk will be also be constructed on the east side of Rt 5/10 from the proposed rotary north.  


A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be discussed at this hearing.


Written views received by MassDOT subsequent to the date of this notice and up to five (5) days prior to the date of the hearing shall be displayed for public inspection and copying at the time and date listed above.  Plans will be on display one-half hour before the hearing begins, with an engineer in attendance to answer questions regarding this project.  A project handout will be made available on the MassDOT website listed below.


Written statements and other exhibits in place of, or in addition to, oral statements made at the Public Hearing regarding the proposed undertaking are to be submitted to Patricia A.
